Special Protocols

  • Holiday protocol
  • Following are the guidelines for maintenance during the holiday (note these are guidelines, rather than rules):

    • Hours are extended 12 noon – 8pm. If you are eating past 8pm, make sure that you finish eating at least 2 hours before you go to bed.
    • A total of two servings of fruit (i.e., two cups). We recommend you have a Granny Smith (green) apple around 12 noon as one of your fruits.
    • 1 ½ lbs of vegetables and up to a total of 5 – 7 ounces of protein preferably turkey, chicken or fish (please note that heavier proteins such as beef might give you an upset stomach).
    • Fill up first on the veggies and protein. After that, if you would like to taste other things do just that – taste and be sensible (i.e., not a whole plateful).
    • One glass of wine or clean alcohol (e.g., vodka tonic, scotch and diet soda, no juice).
    • You will find your sense of satisfaction comes quickly.Listen to your body and stop eating when you feel satisfied. Paying attention will stop you from overeating – your old habits are still there but not if you say NO.
    • After the holiday, your first two days are milk / yogurt days, then two fruit / veggie days, etc.

Our goal during the holiday is to maintain your weight; we are not concerned with weight loss during this time.

    Happy Holiday!!!

and protocols for extensive business travel.

  • Exercise
  • Exercise is encouraged but not required.  Please note exercise will not accelerate your weight loss, but is excellent for toning and promoting muscle and bone health.

    allowed not allowed
    • body toning (several sets of 10-15 repetitions)
    • aerobic exercise
    • swimming
    • cycling
    • power walking/jogging/running
    • yoga
    • hiking
    • sports
    • dancing
    • body building

(using excessive weights where you are physically limited to 8 repetitions or less)

*** During the first 2 weeks of the program, you may fatigue more quickly than usual.  Listen to your body and end the exercise for that day.  Continue your regular regimen on the following day and continue to pay attention to your body’s fatigue level.  You will notice the fatigue disappearing as the pancreas and liver adjust to each other on the program.

    prior to exercise
    • the night before, brew a pot of tea (or boil water)
    • for every 8 oz of fluid, mix in 1 teaspoon of honey until it is fully melted
      • for flavor you may add some ReaLemon (zero-calorie lemon juice)
    • put the mixture in the refrigerator overnight

    with exercise
    • bring with you:
      • 8 oz of the honey drink (use a sports bottle or empty water bottle)
      • 20 – 33 oz (1 liter) of a zero-calorie sugar-free electrolyte enhanced drink (e.g., PowerAde Zero, Vitamin Water Zero with electrolytes, a sugar-free electrolyte supplement mix such as Nuun)
    • 5 – 10 minutes before beginning exercise, drink 4 oz (half) of the honey drink to put a floor under your blood sugar
    • while exercising, sip the honey drink whenever you can.  When the honey drink is finished, sip the electrolyte drink
    • within an hour after finishing your exercise, finish drinking the electrolyte drink

You should feel as good as ever while exercising on program.  If you are not feeling right during exercise, please contact your consultant for further guidance.

  • Illness
  • Protocol for Illness
(to avoid build up of mucus)

    1. Until you are feeling better, every day is a fruit / vegetable / salad day:
      • 2 fruits
      • Up to 1 ½ lbs. of vegetables and salad
      • Add up to 5 – 7 oz. of fish or chicken each day
    • Note: it is ok to use chicken broth during this time (no noodles!)
    1. You should drink lots of fluids to keep properly hydrated. Unless instructed by your physician, continue to avoid juice.
    1. When you are feeling better, your first two days back on the program should be VEGGIE days. This will allow your body some additional time to heal without dairy potentially increasing the mucous in your system
    1. Then return to the normal cycle of 2 days milk and yogurt, 2 days fruits and vegetables, etc

If you do not want to take a break from the program, please speak to your consultant about trying one of the non-dairy alternative milk protocols.

Please note, when ill or on antibiotics the body will have a tendency to retain water. This is temporary and will pass. The protocol for illness will temporarily slow the weight loss, but if you follow the guidelines you will not gain.

  • Lactose Intolerance

  • Lactose Intolerance is a deficiency of the lactase enzyme needed to digest lactose (milk sugar).
Those with Lactose Intolerance may be able to digest small amounts of dairy products without assistance, but the symptoms will begin to reveal themselves with higher levels of dairy, such as the levels required while on the Accu Weight‐Loss Program.

To ensure proper nutrition while on the program, it is CRITICAL to address Lactose Intolerance if you are experiencing symptoms. Please note, symptoms will typically appear on milk days, but may occur on your vegetable days as well. Symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • “Brain Fog”
  • Bad taste in your mouth especially on milk days
  • Thick white or black coating on your tongue
  • Your options for addressing Lactose Intolerance are as follows:

    1. Use lactase enzyme supplements on milk days. The most widely available brand is Lactaid (www.lactaid.com). Lactase enzymes are sold over the counter and are typically located near the antacids. Follow the instructions on the packaging. Should some symptoms continue to appear, you should consider increasing the dosage (for most brands, the standard dosage is to assist digestion of approximately 8 oz of dairy).

    2. Switch to lactose free milk. The most widely available brand is Lactaid (www.lactaid.com). Note WHOLE milk is in the RED container.

    3. You may use a combination of the above, i.e., use lactose free milk at home and use lactase enzyme supplements with yogurt and/or when you use regular milk outside of the home.

    4. Use an alternative milk protocol (ask your consultant for more information)
Please notify your consultant if you continue to experience symptoms of Lactose Intolerance so we may assist in addressing the situation.

  • Medication
  • Protocol for Medication

Many medications cause water retention. This will slow the scale, but not the fat loss. It may take 7 - 10 days after you finish the course of your medication for the water retention to pass. Focus on the change in your body and the inches lost and you will continue to see your success.

If you are on medication which requires you take it with food outside of the normal program eating hours of 12pm - 6pm, do the following:

    milk day
    • does your medication specifically indicate no dairy?
      • if no, have 2 - 3 oz of milk or 1 TBSP of yogurt with your medication
      • if yes, have ½ hard-boiled egg with your medication
    vegetable day
    • does your medication specifically indicate no potassium?
      • if no, have ½ banana with your medication
      • if yes, have ½ apple with your medication
As long as you do not eat more than the recommended amounts, your body will only recognize the food you've eaten as a buffer and it will not compromise the program or slow your weight loss. Eating excess amounts will confuse the chemistry of the program and will slow your weight loss.
