Flavored Drinks and Milkshakes

Some of our dieters discovered sugar-free syrups and came up with several great-tasting drinks.  Some of their recipes are shown below.  Sugar-free syrups can be purchased at some grocery stores, department stores, such as Marshall's, and online at http://www.davincigourmet.com.  Please remember that any yogurt used must be WHOLE MILK YOGURT.

Janet's Signature Shake

6 oz milk
1 heaping tablespoon Walden Farm's sugar-free chocolate dip
1 heaping tablespoon Walden Farm's sugar-free caramel dip
3 or 4 ounces DaVinci caramel syrup (you can also use butter rum and tiramisu in place of caramel)
6 to 8 ice cubes
Put all the ingredients in a large blender.  Blend on low for 20 seconds, then on full high for 3 minutes.
It doubles in volume and is thick, creamy and delicious.
Note:  Blending for 3 minutes is important!

Apple Pie Shake (Mitch)

8 oz milk
Caramel syrup
2 big dollops of yogurt (optional, and be sure to count in your daily allowance)
2 packages of Splenda
Apple Pie spice (to taste)
2 ice cubes
Whip, drink, yummy !

Black Forest Latte (Arlene):
Mix 1 cup milk with a couple of teaspoons of instant coffee.
Add touch of Splenda to add froth to the mixture.
Microwave until lukewarm.
Add 3 oz of sugar-free chocolate syrup and 3/4 oz of sugar-free cherry syrup.

Caramel Chocolate Smoothie (Arlene)
Makes 1/2 blender full
Blend with crushed ice
1/2 cup milk
3 squirts of sugar-free caramel and 4 squirts of sugar-free chocolate

Chai Smoothie (Arlene)

Mix 6 oz mil, 2 cups of ice, and 3 oz of Spiced Chai in a blender.  Delicious!
Also try Chai-cicles.... 1 part Chai, 5 parts milk.  Pour into molds and freeze
Sugar-Free Spiced Chair Black Tea Latte is a Davinci Syrup.

Pina Colada (Nature's Flavor)

2 oz desired Natures Flavor syrup
2 oz Nature's Flavors Coconut Syrup
4 oz Nature's Flavors Pineapple Syrup
1/2 oz Nature's Flavors Rum Syrup
Desired fruit to match or complement syrup such as banana, pineapple, mango, strawberry, blueberry, peach, honeydew, etc.
1 cup ice
1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum (optional)

Combine ingredients in blender and process until smooth.  Pour into 22-oz hurricane glass (or two smaller hurricane/poco grande glasses) and serve.  Note that the optional Xanthan gum is a natural thickener that will add body and keep pina colada from separating.

Milk Variations

One member wrote:  You can go online to davincigourmet.com and look for sugar-free Davinci or Oscar syrups - They come in about 40 flavors - the peppermint paddy is outrageous. (Hazelnut, English Toffee, Chocolate, Raspberry, Vanilla and Caramel are great also - The only one I didn't like very much was the peach). I make shakes - I bought a blender that I leave in the office - I put ice, 6 to 8 oz of milk and the syrup of choice in the blender and mix. I use a lot of ice and it makes the mixture pretty thick - I bought a 24 oz glass at Wal-Mart and the contents of the blender fill the glass - It is a huge serving.

I also brew some strong coffee, Splenda, ice and milk and blend - also delicious.

A woman I work with mixes milk and sugar free syrup and freezes it in ice cube trays - after they freeze she puts them in a blender to make slushies. She swears by them - convenient and tasty.

On veg/fruit days, I also used the syrups to make smoothies - A banana, a couple of strawberries or raspberries, some raspberry syrup and some chocolate syrup and some ice - Blend - It makes a fantastic smoothie.

Pina Colada (Nature's Flavor Way)

2 oz desired Nature's Flavors syrup
2 oz Nature's Flavors Coconut Syrup
4 oz Nature's Flavors Pineapple Syrup
1/2 oz Nature's Flavors Rum Syrup
desired fruit to match/complement syrup: banana, pineapple, mango, strawberry, blueberry, peach, honeydew, etc.
1 cup Ice
1/2 tsp Xanthan gum (optional)

Combine ingredients in blender and process until smooth. Pour into 22-oz hurricane glass (or two smaller hurricane/poco grande glasses) and serve. Note: Xanthan gum is a natural thickener that will add body and keep pina colada from separating. It is however, totally optional.

Use sugar-free syrups to make shakes on milk days - Use about 6-8 oz of milk,
probably about half that amount of syrup and ice - Lots of ice - put it in a
blender and enjoy -

You can also use the syrups to flavor coffee and seltzer.

One of our members went Marshall's store and found some Sugar-Free spiced Chai Black Tea latte and a couple of recipes....

Sugar Free Spiced Chai Black Tea Latte - It is a DaVinci Syrup but the label is brown and royal blue with a blue cap - easy to miss at Marshall’s among all the other items, especially if you are looking for the silver caps. I made an iced tea to go with my salad at lunch - Delicious

There are a few recipes on this label.

Chai Smoothie
In a blender mix 6 oz milk, 2 cups of ice, and 3 oz of Spiced Chai - My Accu Weight friend at work is doing a milk day and she made this - It was also delicious.

Chai-cicles
1 part Chai, 5 parts milk - pour into molds and freeze

MITCH’S MILK SHAKES

6-7 oz milk
2 heaping T plain yogurt
DaVinci butter rum or eggnog syrup, White chocolate/raspberry
2 ice cubes
2 packets Splenda
1t. Xanthan gum

Blend until pulverized

Egg Creams (Tom)

The traditional Brooklyn Egg Cream has always been made with neither eggs nor cream.
4 ounces cold whole milk
1.5 tablespoons Walden Farms Chocolate Syrup
4 - 5 ounces cold seltzer
Pour milk into a large (12oz) glass, add chocolate syrup
Open a fresh small bottle of seltzer. Canada Dry makes a 10 Oz size
glass bottle that is perfect because it can be quickly resealed,
preserving leftover seltzer for a short time.
The egg cream is best made with fresh seltzer. If you use flat
seltzer it's just diluted chocolate milk.
Take a long spoon or a teaspoon and briskly stir the milk and syrup
while quickly pouring about half the bottle of seltzer into the glass.
The milk will foam up, so stop pouring and stirring before it overflows.
Drink immediately and enjoy.

"Buttermilk" Yogurt (Roopa)

Try this when the days are very H=hot; avoid it on cold days.

On Hot Days If You Are Replacing Your 10 oz Milk With 10 oz WHOLE Yogurt Try The Following....
The Drink Is Called: Lassi /Chaas Or Plain Buttermilk...

Measure the yogurt  and put in blender
Add some ice cubes and some roasted cumin seeds

Blend the yogurt with about a cup of water, pinch of salt, grated 1/2" ginger, a pinch of black pepper and if you find an Indian grocery store get "chat masala"
or "jiralu" and add a pinch. (It can be made without this last ingredient)
Don't blend it too much or it will start separating.
Once you see it is smooth pour it into a tall glass
Chop some coriander and mint leaves. Sprinkle on top
and add another pinch of roasted cumin seeds
If you like it sweeter you can add anything you want...
Try the strawberry (zero-calorie Walden Farms) marmalade ...

Let Your Imagination Run Wild .... and sip ...and sip ....and sip ...and sip ...till 6 pm ...

Note: Roopa says you can use the chat masala in lot of other dishes:  Sprinkle on a bowl of fruit, on zucchini fries, on eggplant or banana chips, even on watermelon or cantaloupe.
