Pressure to Cheat

Emails below address questions from people having difficult times and responses from Dr Schwartz........

Hello Dr. S.

I just wanted to tell you that I am very happy with my weight loss so far and happy that I found you, although I know I could have been at my goal by now. There are days when I do so well then all it takes is that ONE DAY! But with me its not just that one little snack of cheating or that one piece of chicken that I munched at, I go crazy! I eat anything and everything in sight, its as if I've never seen food before. And then of course, I feel physically sick the whole day.  I know the one thing that you said that first day I met you 6 weeks ago was what ever I do, DO NOT CHEAT!  I know it slows down the weight loss process, which is why it drives me insane when I cheat! Especially since I feel that I only have about another 10-15 pounds to lose. I wanted to ask if you had any suggestions on
how not to deviate on those bad days when you crave food and the hunger pains just don't go away.

Thank you so much,...

Joanne

Dear Joanne,

I think the first thing is to realize that what you describe is a reaction to something, not just "one of those things that happen."

It's not that you're hungry or need something. It's a feeling, (becoming a thought) , that is demanding attention. It becomes a pressure and you deal with it out of habit (eating).

This is something that happens to most of us. It could be almost any emotional issue or circumstance that acts as the trigger.

What to do?

1. Accept that it will happen.

2. Decide NOW, what ACTION you will take when it occurs.

3. Prepare to act in the manner you've chosen.

4. There is to be no thinking... You have already determined your action... Do It.

It can be anything you choose that you will follow. Drink water, climb stairs, go for a walk, start singing, write a letter, take a bath, tell your kids a story, watch TV with them, call a girlfriend, Do the Chi Gong breathing.

If you are prepared it will go smoothly, but not necessarily easily. Give it 2 weeks and you will see how much easier it gets and how much better you feel.
