• An Apple a Day

Dr. Schwartz:  The adage may be old, but modern science proves that apples can help keep the doctor way.

Apples are high in fiber and rich in the power flavonoid quercetin.  Quercetin has been found to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer and may protect the arteries and heart through its antioxidant activity.

Here are just a few varieties of fall's most famous crop of apples.

  • Golden Delicious: Yellow, crisp, sweet, good for cooking or eating.
  • McIntosh: Slightly tart, red, great for eating, okay for cooking.
  • Granny Smith: Green, crunchy, sweet/tart, great for eating or cooking.  Originally from Australia, now grown in America.
  • Jonathan: Crisp, red, good for eating, okay for cooking (except for use as baked apples), great for applesauce, does not store well.
  • Red Delicious: Large, sweet, tender, can be mushy, better for eating than cooking.
  • Rome Beauty: Tender, red, can be mealy, perfect for use as baked apples.
